Phil Haysmer’s talents as an artist cover a wide range. His formal education in art, art history and sculpture allowed him to teach college level art both in the United States and in Australia. Since then his artistic skills led him to two successful sculpture businesses, one in Campbell and one in Santa Cruz, California. In Los Gatos, he also worked as a profes-sional framer, and later established his own graphic design studio in Capitola. After meeting his wife, Lunel, the Haysmers opened Many Hands Gallery in 1990 in Eureka California.

Phil sometimes comments that working in wood must be a genetic gift from his grandfather who operated the last remaining steam-powered saw mill in central Michigan. Now living in the heart of Northern California’s ancient redwoods, Phil creates a beautiful line of redwood clocks, barometers, tide clocks and wind chimes.
All of the wood products created by Phil are from stumps and timber harvest over 100 years ago.  Huge stumps remain across vast acres – private and public lands – and these stumps are the genuine prize, yielding a wood craftsman lots of beautiful raw materials.  Phil also enjoys a variety of other artistic avenues including watercolors and creating wood masks and sculptures, in a variety of media including antler.

ONE OF A KIND: is what makes Phil’s beautiful redwood products so appreciated. Phil uses stumps from trees that were harvested 100 years ago and old recycled redwood from barns and remodeled homes. Phil sells most of his redwood gifts through Many Hands Gallery in Old Town Eureka, California.

Interesting grain patterns are found in redwood such as “curly,” “sapwood” (which is lighter in color), “birds-eye” and “fancy lace.” Some of these wood grains are more difficult to obtain and in very limited quantities, particularly true of “fancy lace” burl, and this will be reflected in the prices. (Note: raw fancy lace burl is sold locally at $30/board foot.)

Redwood features include a wide range of colors, from dark red-browns to the buttery yellows of sapwood. Stumps from redwood trees feature not only a variety of color, but also inclusions that tell each tree’s history. For example, recycled barn wood may contain old nail holes or dents; stumps may have burn marks from ancient fires or interesting bark inclusions. These are not “imperfections” but features that make each piece unique.
